چکیده

Cement kilns firing hazardous waste are explicitly mentioned in the Stockholm Convention as an "industrial source having the potential for comparatively high formation and release of these chemicals to the environment". The substitution of fossil fuels with alternative waste derived fuels is a well-developed practice in a number of countries. In the European cement industry about 6 million tonnes are used which corresponds to a thermal substitution rate of 17%. The current study evaluates around 2200 dioxin/furan stack emission measurements collected from various sources. It is demonstrated that most cement kilns can meet an emission level of 0.1ngTEQ/Nm(3) if primary measures, i.e. process-integrated measures, are applied. Reducing the temperature to a level lower than 200°C at the inlet of the air pollution control device is the key factor which has shown to limit dioxin formation and emissions at all types of cement kilns, independent of waste feeding.

Metals as Catalysts for Dioxin Formation

Copper (Cu) is the most potent catalyst for dioxin formation, but Iron (Fe), Zinc (Zn), Potassium (K) and Sodium (Na) have also been found in multiple studies to be correlated with increased dioxin/furan formation. Some studies have also indicated that Manganese (Mn), Magnesium (Mg) and Nickel (Ni) may also serve as catalysts for dioxin formation. Studies have conflicted on whether Aluminum (Al...

Emissions of PCDD/Fs, PBDD/Fs, dioxin like-PCBs and PAHs from a cement plant using a long-term monitoring system.

The aim of the present work was to assess the emission of different persistent organic pollutants from a cement plant over a period of one year, under normal operational conditions. Thus, a long-term sampling device was installed in the clinker kiln stack of the cement plant. The factory uses petroleum coke as primary fuel, but also alternative fuels such as solid recovered fuel (SRF), automoti...

The Use of Nanoaccelerator in Cement Slurries in Low Temperature Well Conditions

It has long been known that temperature during circulation and after cement placement is one of the most important parameters for slurry design and the success in cement production. Conventional cements and low density cement slurries usually take a long time to set and cannot provide significant compressive strength. Therefore, it is important to design appropriate low density cement slurries ...

Formation, release and control of dioxins in cement kilns.

Co-processing of hazardous wastes in cement kilns have for decades been thought to cause increased emissions of PCDD/PCDFs--a perception that has been evaluated in this study. Hundreds of PCDD/PCDF measurements conducted by the cement industry and others in the last few years, on emissions and solid materials, as well as recent test burns with hazardous wastes in developing countries do not sup...

Formation of Dioxins and Furans during Municipal Solid Waste Gasification

Thermal treatment is an interesting strategy to dispose of municipal solid waste: it reduces the volume and weight of the material dumped in landfills and generates alternative energy. However, the process emits pollutants, such as dioxins and furans. The present study evaluated MSW gasification-combustion integrated technologies in terms of dioxin and furan emission; and compared the obtained ...
